How Position Affects Meaning

Before reading individual symbols, position matters. Symbols near the rim of the cup relate to the near future and current circumstances. Symbols in the middle of the cup relate to the coming weeks or months. Symbols at the bottom of the cup relate to the distant future or deep underlying influences. Symbols on the left side of the cup (from the reader's perspective) relate to the past or to things leaving; symbols on the right relate to what is coming.

Animals

Bird — good news is coming, often from a distance. A bird in flight suggests messages or communication on their way. A bird facing left suggests news from the past.

Cat — independence, intuition, and the hidden aspects of a situation. Cats in readings often point to someone acting behind the scenes or to a need for greater self-reliance.

Dog — loyalty, friendship and trustworthy companions. A dog near the rim suggests that a faithful friend will be significant in the near future.

Snake — wisdom, transformation and, in some traditions, warning. A snake in coil suggests a situation that requires careful handling; a straight snake suggests movement and forward progress.

Horse — freedom, movement, travel and vitality. Often associated with a journey or with a spirited, independent person entering your life.

Objects and Structures

House — security, home, family matters. A clear house suggests stability; a broken or unclear house can suggest domestic uncertainty.

Key — answers, solutions and access to what was previously unavailable. A key near the rim suggests that a solution to a current problem is imminent.

Anchor — stability, groundedness and the holding of something fast. In the upper portion of the cup, an anchor suggests security coming; at the bottom, it may suggest being held back by something.

Clock — time pressure, deadlines or the importance of timing in a situation. It can also suggest a need to pay closer attention to how you are using your time.

Mountain — obstacles, challenges and the effort required to reach goals. A clear mountain suggests the obstacle is real but surmountable; multiple mountains suggest a period of sustained challenge.

Natural Symbols

Acorn — potential, growth and the planting of seeds that will bear fruit in time. A strong symbol for new beginnings that will develop slowly but solidly.

Apple — health, abundance and the fruits of effort. Near the top of the cup it suggests good health and material prosperity.

Cross — trials, burdens and the weight of a current situation. Depending on its clarity and position, it can also suggest spiritual protection. Multiple crosses can indicate a period of significant difficulty.

Star — hope, inspiration and guidance from beyond. Stars are generally positive symbols — they suggest that things are aligned and that intuition or spiritual guidance is available.

Moon — intuition, emotions, and the cycles of feeling. A full circle shape suggests emotional completion; a crescent suggests something in development.

Letters and Numbers

Letters that appear in tea leaf readings typically refer to a person whose name begins with that letter. Numbers indicate time spans (days, weeks, months) or quantities depending on context. The letter R near a heart shape might suggest a romantic person whose name begins with R; the number 3 near a travel symbol might suggest a journey in three weeks or months.

Reading in Context

No symbol in tasseography is read in isolation. A skull next to a cross in the upper cup is a very different reading from a skull at the bottom surrounded by stars. The skull (transformation, endings) changes its significance entirely based on what surrounds it and where it sits. The practice of reading is the practice of holding all symbols in relation to each other and letting a narrative emerge from the whole rather than cataloguing individual pieces.
