How to Find Your Birth Moon Phase

You can find your birth Moon phase at any astrology chart site (astro.com, for example) by generating your natal chart and noting the distance between your Sun and Moon in degrees. Alternatively, many sites will simply tell you directly. The eight phases are: New Moon (0-45° Sun-Moon separation), Crescent (45-90°), First Quarter (90-135°), Gibbous (135-180°), Full Moon (180-135°), Disseminating (135-90°), Last Quarter (90-45°), and Balsamic (45-0°, Moon behind the Sun).

New Moon (Sun and Moon in the same sign or within 45°)

Born at the New Moon, you came into the world at the very beginning of the lunar cycle — in darkness, full of potential. New Moon people tend to be instinctive, subjective and highly motivated by beginnings. You operate largely from feeling and instinct, are oriented toward the future, and have the capacity to begin things with genuine conviction. The challenge is follow-through past the initial burst of enthusiasm.

Crescent Moon (45-90°)

Crescent Moon people are born into struggle — the Moon is beginning to emerge from the Sun's shadow, and that emergence requires effort. There is a quality of striving against resistance that runs through these people's lives. They tend to be tenacious, to be motivated by challenges, and to develop significant capability through sustained effort in the face of difficulty. Early life often involves overcoming something.

First Quarter (90-135°)

The First Quarter Moon is the crisis of action — the Moon is exactly square the Sun, creating the need to act decisively and build structures. People born at this phase tend to be action-oriented, pragmatic and good at getting things done. They can appear restless or forceful; they are essentially hardwired to move, build and make things happen in the concrete world.

Gibbous (135-180°)

The Gibbous Moon is associated with refinement, analysis and the drive toward perfection. People born in this phase tend to be analytical, self-examining and motivated by a deep desire to understand and improve. Virgo themes — discernment, critique, the pursuit of quality — tend to run through these charts regardless of actual Virgo placements.

Full Moon (180-135°)

Born at the Full Moon, with the Sun and Moon in opposite signs, Full Moon people tend to operate with high awareness of polarity and relationship. The inner world and the outer world, the personal self and the other, are in dialogue. These people are often highly attuned to others, drawn to relationships and partnership, and can feel pulled in two directions simultaneously. They tend to be good at illuminating situations for others precisely because they hold both sides naturally.

Disseminating (135-90°)

Disseminating Moon people are natural communicators and teachers. Born as the Moon moves toward the last quarter, they feel strongly motivated to share what they've learned and experienced. There is often a quality of the missionary or advocate — a strong sense that understanding must be spread. These people tend to be effective at reaching others with ideas and information.

Last Quarter (90-45°)

Last Quarter Moon people are often consciously re-evaluating and reorienting, moving away from structures that no longer serve them. There is a quality of the reformer — someone who can see clearly what needs to change. These people often find themselves at the forefront of shifts, either in their own lives or in their communities.

Balsamic (45-0°)

The Balsamic Moon is the dark of the moon — just before the New Moon arrives. People born here tend to carry a quality of completion and release, sometimes mixed with a sense of isolation or being slightly out of step with mainstream currents. They are often old souls — oriented toward what is ending and what will come next, with less investment in maintaining what currently is. Highly intuitive and often drawn to spiritual practice.
