Major Arcana · Card XIII
Death is perhaps the most misunderstood card in the entire tarot. It almost never signifies physical death — rather, it is the card of transformation through ending. The skeleton rides impassively as all classes of people fall before it, because change makes no exceptions. But look closer: in the background, the sun rises between two towers. Endings in this card are always, ultimately, beginnings.
In a reading, Death speaks of a necessary conclusion — a phase, a relationship, an identity, a way of being in the world that has run its course. The invitation is not to mourn but to release, to allow what has been to become the fertile ground for what is coming. Fighting this transformation only prolongs the liminal discomfort. Trust the process of letting go. What dies in your life now makes space for something that is more truly yours.
