Major Arcana · Card XV
The Devil looms above two chained figures — but look closely: the chains around their necks are loose, the shackles could be slipped free. They remain bound not by force but by choice, by habit, by the seductive comfort of familiar limitation. The Devil does not hold anyone captive who truly wishes to leave. He is the card of bondage chosen, of shadows unexamined, of the stories we tell ourselves that keep us small.
In a reading, The Devil shines a light on the places where you have given your power away — to an addiction, a pattern, a fear, a relationship dynamic, a belief that you are less than you are. It is not a card of condemnation but of honest reckoning. The first step out of any bondage is seeing it clearly. Whatever has its hooks in you right now, The Devil asks: is this truly serving you? And if not — why are you still holding on?
